Factory air purification and filter system retrofit at STRABAG in Spittal an der Drau

At the STRABAG BMTI GmbH production site, an existing filtration system was to be modernized in order to improve industrial air purification and reduce energy consumption. INFRANORM® integrated the existing system into an expanded overall system featuring additional filtration technology as well as summer and winter operation modes tailored to demand. This made it possible to continue using the existing infrastructure while simultaneously improving air quality.

Project details

An older filtration system for indoor air filtration had already been installed at the STRABAG production facility. The airflow had to be optimized to more effectively capture contaminated air at ceiling level. At the same time, the existing filtration capacity was insufficient for the required air volume.

A key requirement was integration into the existing infrastructure. In addition, operation had to be adjusted seasonally: In the summer, the goal was to avoid unnecessary heat gain, while in the winter, the existing heat in the hall was to be reused as much as possible.

INFRANORM® integrated the existing system into an expanded hall air purification system and added a new cartridge filter. This increases the total exhaust capacity to up to 17,000 m³/h. Three exhaust lines capture diffuse emissions beneath the hall ceiling. Using an outside air/recirculated air switch, contaminated air is exhausted in the summer, while in the winter, purified air is recirculated into the hall via HEPA filters and displacement ventilation outlets.

The result is improved air quality in the hall with up to 5.8 air changes per hour and residual emissions of < 0.5 mg/m³. At the same time, the retrofit enables demand-based summer and winter operation and preserves key components of the existing system infrastructure.

“By modernizing the existing filtration system, we were able to improve air quality in the production hall while also implementing an energy-efficient solution for both summer and winter operations. We made good use of the existing infrastructure in the process.”

synopsis

The project at STRABAG highlights the potential of targeted retrofitting of existing filtration technology. Instead of completely replacing the existing system, the existing infrastructure was upgraded and adapted to meet the latest requirements for air purification in production halls.

The benefits for STRABAG:

  • Improved indoor air quality through targeted removal of diffuse emissions
  • Exhaust air flow rate of up to 17,000 m³/h
  • Up to 5.8 air changes per hour
  • Utilization of existing plant heat in the winter
  • Continued use of the existing filter system instead of a complete replacement

In short: The retrofit combines effective indoor air purification with energy-efficient operation and the sensible reuse of the existing infrastructure.
